A Father's View on Swaddling Blankets

One of the greatest things to have ever happened in my life is to have become a father. I am fortunate because I have been blessed three times over. After months of anticipation hours of labor and what seems a lifetime worth of stress your child is brought into this world. You have prepared agonized and hoped for this moment, the moment you finally get to meet your new baby, and you can't keep back the waterworks. If your anything like me your crying before the baby is. Now that your little bundle is in your hands, you want to make them as comfortable as possible to limit the crying and help them sleep so that hopefully you can sleep too. One of the best ways to make them comfortable is to swaddle them.

Swaddling is basically taking a blanket and wrapping your baby in the blanket to limit their movement and mimic the womb. I have done it with all of my children and it worked really well (I wish I could still do it with my two year old). Swaddling has been done for thousands of years by every culture. It has only been recently that swaddling has started to become popular again in the United States. We are starting to again see the benefits of swaddling for the baby and for the parents.

When you swaddle your baby it mimics the womb by limiting movement and trapping heat. You will notice that your little bundle will sleep better and be more comfortable by preventing sudden movement of their arms and legs when they are startled, it will keep them from scratching themselves with their razor like talons on their fingertips, and it could also help a colicky baby calm down.

You are helped by your baby being swaddled in one major aspect. Swaddling greatly increases your chances of sleeping more. That pretty much sums up my reason for swaddling, I get to sleep. Swaddling is not the complete end all, miracle solution for all your baby needs, but it is a wonderful way to make your new baby feel comfortable and secure in this big world.
